After serving 8 years in the Washington State Senate I have decided to run for a 3rd term.

I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the people of the 16th district, which includes Columbia, Walla Walla and parts of Franklin and Benton Counties.

There are many large looming issues before the legislature and I want to help bring solid, well thought out public policy to the residents of Washington State.

I went to Olympia to work together as one state. It is always a goal of mine to help craft legislation that will work for the majority of citizens. This is a very diverse state and “one size does not fit all”. We have to remember that when we are passing legislation.

It is our (the legislature) fiduciary responsibility to spend the public’s money wisely. In the past four years the state budget has grown by 33%. Spending is out pacing income and we have to get it under control.

Sen. Hewitt serves as the Senate Republican Leader. In the past eight years he has always held a leadership position in the caucus. In addition the being the leader he serves as the ranking member on the Rules Committee as well as the Facilities and Operation Committee of the Senate.

He has served on Senate Ways and Means for the past 8 years and helped Dino Rossi write the state budget in 2003. In addition his present committees include Labor and Commerce, Education and Early Learning, and Rules.

Outside of session Hewitt serves on the State Tourism Commission, the Horse Racing Commission, the Lt.Governor’s Economic Development and International Trade committee, the Community Economic Revitalization Board (CERB) as well as several task forces and special committees.
